Pickleball singles vs doubles
Choose a format that suits how you want to play.
Singles and doubles are two ways to enjoy pickleball. Singles has one player on each side; doubles has two. The choice affects how you cover the court, communicate and prepare, so it is worth checking the format before booking a session or entering an event.
Singles: you cover your side
In singles, you are responsible for the whole playable area on your side. There is no partner to cover a wide return or the next shot. Practice moving back into a useful position after hitting the ball and work on choosing placements that let you recover. If you are new, a shorter practice session can help you understand the format before entering competition.
Doubles: movement and communication
In doubles, partners share court coverage. Agree who takes balls down the middle and use simple calls such as “mine” or “yours” to avoid hesitation. Watch where your partner is positioned rather than treating each shot as a separate solo rally. A shared approach to positioning is often more useful than both players chasing the ball.
What stays familiar
Both formats use the pickleball court, paddles and ball. The two-bounce rule and non-volley-zone concepts apply in standard play. Scoring and serving sequences need attention, particularly when moving between formats or entering an event with a different scoring system. Refer to the USA Pickleball rules summary for standard concepts and the organiser's rules for your specific event.
Picking your first format
Choose doubles if you want to learn with a friend and practise team communication. Choose singles if you want to explore individual court coverage and decision-making. Neither format replaces learning the rules. Beginner sessions may include both, so ask the organiser what the session covers and whether you need to bring a partner.
Before entering a doubles event
Confirm that both players meet the division requirements. Agree on availability, registration responsibilities and how you will receive schedule updates. Check the organiser's partner-change conditions before paying. Mixed doubles and age-based divisions may have additional eligibility criteria stated on the event page.
